I'm travelling abroad - what do I need to do in order to use my mobile and how much will it cost?
1. Will your phone work in the location you are travelling to? Check the Going Abroad section of the Vodafone website (http://www.vodafone.co.uk/goingabroad) to find out more details including how to use your phone whilst abroad. Certain countries will require a tri or quad-band phone, if you are not sure if yours is either of these please contact us. If your phone does not work in the location you are travelling to, we can often hire you a phone to use - see http://www.vodafonehire.co.uk for further details.
2. Check your international and roaming bars are lifted. If your phone bill is paid by someone other than you seek their permission first as using mobile phones abroad can be costly! Simply contact Vodafone Customer Services on 191 from a Vodafone mobile or 08700700191 from any other phone. If you are an individual customer you can also request the removal of your international roaming bar on www.vodafone.co.uk.
3. Call costs. These vary depending which tariff you are on, where you are going and which network you use whilst you are there. For basic free cost information text FROM then the name of country you are visiting to 4636; eg if you are going to Spain text FROM SPAIN to 4636. Vodafone will send you a text message with the cost of making calls, receiving calls and sending texts from your chosen country and the name of the cheapest network to use. More detailed information can be obtained from Vodafone Customer Services.
4. Retrieving voicemail whilst abroad.
Firstly, set up your Vodafone Voicemail security code. Your Vodafone Voicemail security code is activated automatically whenever you're abroad, so you'll need to personalise this code before you travel to be able to access your messages. To do this, call 121 and follow the instructions by pressing 1, then 4, then 2.
Check to find out if the network/country you are visiting has shortcode access via Vodafone website's costs and coverage area. If it does you can dial 121 or 242 for Voicemail access, and Vodafone will text you if you have any voicemail messages.
If not follow the instructions below :
Dial *#104# to get your international voicemail number. Save this number in your phone.
When you are abroad, dial your international voicemail number and when you hear your voicemail greeting press 9.
You will then be prompted for your Vodafone Voicemail security code in order to access your voicemail.
Once you have entered your security code correctly, you will gain access to your voicemail messages.
In some countries it is now possible to use your standard voicemail retrieval number, .e. 121 or 242. If you have problems retrieving your voicemail when abroad contact customer services on 08700700191.
5. Calling the UK from abroad. Substitute the first zero of the number you are calling with +44, eg to call 01202679503 you would dial in +441202679503.
6. Pack your phone charger and a travel plug adaptor - it's easy to forget!
